CHICAGO (WLS) -- A 26-year-old man was shot multiple times in the 1200-block of North Clark Street in Chicago's Gold Coast neighborhood, Chicago police say.

The shooting happened near the Clark/Division CTA Red Line stop. Police say the shooter got out of a vehicle, fired shots at the victim, then got back into the vehicle and fled.

The victim was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition. Police said the shooter was also male and fled the scene.

Witnesses were shocked to see gunfire in the neighborhood.

"I basically heard about six or seven shots about a half hour ago. They were very loud. I looked out the window the gentleman was laying in the street bleeding," said Jihad Baker, witness.

"It's crazy man. There ain't never been no shooting-I've been working here for like a year and there ain't never been no violence. I feel safe down here," said witness Dujuan Gaston.

Police say the victim is a documented gang member and a convicted felon. They have not officially released a motive in his shooting.

North Clark has been blocked off since 8:30 p.m. as police investigate, look for evidence and talk to witnesses.
