CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago police say murders so far this year are at their lowest level since 1965.

According to the department, there were 22 fewer murders in the first ten months of this this year compared to 2013, a 6 percent drop.

Overall crime is down 15 percent, but shootings are up. The department says there were 145 more shootings in the first 10 months of 2014 than 2013, but 354 fewer shootings compared to 2012.

"So far this year we have had the fewest amount of murders since 1965, yet we all know it's not enough and there's much more work to be done," said Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy.
