QUEENS, N.Y. -- A pregnant 27-year-old woman was shot to death outside her home near Horace Harding Expressway early Wednesday morning, and despite doctors best efforts to save the child, the baby girl passed away at the hospital.

Police say Anastasia Maffey was returning home around 8:35 a.m. after dropping her children off at school when she was shot in the chest and arm.

Maffey, who was 25 weeks pregnant, was rushed to Elmhurst General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The suspect fled the scene.

Detectives want to question a relative in connection with the shooting, but would not elaborate.

The victim's husband told police that while he was home sleeping, his wife dropped off the four children at school.

He said he heard gunshots and banging on the apartment door, and when he went into the hallway, he found his wife shot.

The baby was alive for several hours at the hospital.
