Reward offered in Gary police officer's death

GARY, Ind. (WLS) -- A $10,000 reward is offered for information in the shooting death of Gary Police Officer Jeff Westerfield.

Lake County Sheriff John Buncich announced the reward on Wednesday. Officer Westerfield was shot to death in his squad car on July 6, 2014. Investigators have said a person of interest is in custody.

Hundreds of people paid tribute to the fallen officer at a vigil Wednesday night. Bikers with the Indiana Patriot Guard and a veterans group called "Unforgotten Souls" dropped roses on the hood of a Gary police squad car in Westerfield's honor.
