String of armed robberies reported near University of Chicago

Police issued an alert for University of Chicago students and other nearby residents after robberies were reported near campus.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago police are warning people in the University of Chicago area about a string of reported armed robberies.

There have been 10 incidents in that neighborhood since August, officials said.

A University of Chicago student was walking near Ellis and 61st Street Monday around 2:45 p.m. when a man allegedly approached him with a gun and demanded his personal property, running off with the victim's computer and iPhone, police said.

In the Nov. 11 incident, the suspects were described as follows:

  • African American female with a light complexion and dreadlocks
  • African American male around 5-foot-11 with a light complexion and dreadlocks
  • African American male between 5-foot-5 and 5-foot-6

In two of the Nov. 7 incidents, a suspect was described as an African American male around 5-foot-10 with a scar or tattoo on his neck. Two victims of Sept. 7 incidents reported that one of the suspects had a tattoo on his face, police said.
