CHICAGO (WLS) -- The mother of Tykwone Davis, 17, says her son was shot several times by officers in Chicago's Back of the Yards neighborhood.

Chicago police said they made a traffic stop in the 5100-block of South Wood Street around 11 p.m. Wednesday when they heard shots and saw two men shooting at each other from opposite sides of the street.

When the officers approached them, police said Davis allegedly turned in their direction and fired. Police said they shot back, striking the accused gunman several times.

"We got a call around 11:30 p.m. that my son had just got shot by police. He got shot five times: one time in the head, two times in the back, two times in the leg and one in both arms. Police are trying to say that he had a gun and he was pointing it at them," said Willette Middleton, the victim's mother.

Davis was taken to Stroger Hospital, where she said he is in critical condition.

"How could he have a gun and all his wounds is form the back? My baby didn't have no gun. He just came home himself. I know my baby ain't have no gun. They didn't have to shoot my baby like that, that many times. It don't make no type of sense," Middleton said.

"He didn't have a gun on him. He was out there with his friends because he just got out of jail so he was out seeing his friends," said Tyrone Davis, the victim's father.

No officers were injured in the shooting. A weapon was recovered at the scene. Area Central detectives are still searching for a second person who may have been involved.

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the shooting.
