Teen shot by police in South Chicago

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A teen was shot by a police officer in the city's South Chicago neighborhood overnight. His mother said he is 14 years old.

Officers responded to a report of gunfire in the 8900-block of South Escanaba Avenue around 10:35 p.m. Thursday when police said they saw two males riding bicycles. The 14-year-old boy was identified by his mother as Dejuan Curry. She said Curry was with his 19-year-old brother when he was shot.

"They were helping a friend move last night, and I guess, during a break police came over and everything took place then," Timothy Gilmore, stepfather, said.

Police said the younger teen ran away from officers when they asked him what he had in his pocket. They followed him, and he pulled out a weapon, officers said. When they asked him to stop and put it down, he refused, police said. One of the officers shot him in the leg.

Curry was shot in both legs by one bullet. He was taken to Comer Children's Hospital.

"They allowed me to see my son for 10 minutes and they had my son cuffed to a bed," Ikyshia Webber said. "I'm a little fed up, a little overwhelmed and upset. Just lost for words. I'm still in shock, I'm a little numb."

Curry's older brother was questioned and released. However, another brother, Donzel Lightfoot, was arrested after police say he attempted to enter the scene. Lightfoot allegedly punched a police officer in the head and damaged a vehicle after he was told he could not enter the scene, police said. He faces one felony charge of aggravated battery to a peace officer and three other misdemeanor charges.

No officers were injured in the shooting, and police said a weapon was recovered at the scene.

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the shooting. Curry faces a misdemeanor charge and will be released to his mother.
