CARPENTERSVILLE, Ill. (WLS) -- A toddler was killed Monday morning in front of his pregnant mother when a driverless truck rolled down a residential street in far northwest suburban Carpentersville.

The 2-year-old boy - identified as Levi Cruz, of Carpentersville - was being dropped off at his grandmother's home at about 9:45 a.m. by his mother, who is eight months pregnant.

The truck struck the toddler in the 1000-block of Deer Creek Road and kept going along the residential street until eventually ending up in a retention pond.

Officers with the Kane County Sheriff's Office and Carpentersville Police Department spent hours at the location reconstructing the incident.

Authorities were reluctant to comment Monday afternoon about what happened, waiting to interview everyone involved.

The boy's mother was hospitalized Monday afternoon and had not spoken with police.
