2 men rescued after car drives into Aurora retention pond

AURORA, Ill. (WLS) -- Two men were critically injured after they drove their car into a retention pond in Aurora Sunday morning, Aurora police said.

The car was occupied by a 48-year-old passenger and a 33-year-old driver who is a relative of the passenger. Police believe that the older man may have been teaching the younger man how to drive in the 300 block of Marshall Avenue.

The car they drove somehow slid into the pond just before 8 a.m. and flipped on its roof, trapping the men for about 10 minutes in four to eight feet of water.

Three Aurora police officers arrived on the scene and righted the car after jumping into the pond. Members of the Aurora Fire Department's dive team were able to extricate the men from the vehicle after cutting the seat belts and pulled the men out of the water with the help of the officers.

Both men are being treated for critical injuries at separate Aurora hospitals, with the older man being prepped to be airlifted to another hospital.
