U of I student Brett Lerner killed in car crash in Champaign

Brett Lerner, 21, killed in car crash near Champaign, Ill.

The University of Illinois is mourning a student killed in a car wreck.

Brett Lerner, 21, worked as a photographer for a TV station in Champaign. He was on his way to shoot a high school football game Friday night for WCIA-TV when the vehicle he was in crossed the center line and hit another car.

Two people in the other car were seriously injured. Michael Halcomb, 73, and Bonnie Halcomb, 72, of Carol Stream, Ill., are hospitalized in critical condition. Their family said they will both need several surgeries.

Lerner, a junior at U of I, is from Buffalo Grove. He graduated from Stevenson High School.
