Valparaiso students ordered to shelter in place
An initial police sweep of the Christopher Center at Valparaiso University has found no evidence of a shooting or hostage situation, school officials said.

VALPARAISO, Ind. (WLS) -- The Porter County Sheriff is questioning a "person of interest" after authorities responded to a false call of a possible hostage situation on campus Tuesday night.

University officials said the Porter County Sheriff's department received a call of a potential hostage situation in the Christopher Center for Library and Information Services on Valparaiso's campus around 7:35 p.m. Tuesday.

The library was sealed and a campus-wide notice to shelter in place was issued as police searched the building. Police said searches of the building found no evidence of a shooting or hostage situation.

Regular campus activities resumed late Tuesday night, and the Christopher Center will reopen on Wednesday morning for regular hours.

Police are continuing to investigate. Anyone with information should contact the Valparaiso Police Department at 219.462.2135, and the Valparaiso University Police Department at 219.464.5430.
