CHICAGO (WLS) -- An 18-year-old woman was shot on the outbound Dan Ryan Expressway early Thursday morning.

Illinois State Police said the woman was riding in a car that was chased onto the Dan Ryan after an incident at a Shell gas station on State Street near 79th Street. The clerk said several cars pulled in around 2 a.m. A man who did not want to be identified said he saw people in two cars arguing near the pumps, before the cars sped off toward the expressway. About 20 minutes later, someone in another vehicle opened fire and struck the woman once in the chest.

A friend rushed her to Little Company of Mary Hospital, where her condition stabilized. State police said she was later transferred to Advocate Christ Medical Center.

Officers shut down the outbound Dan Ryan between 83rd and 95th streets for about two hours to search for evidence. They did not find any shell casings. The expressway reopened around 4:15 a.m.

No one is in custody. The shooting remains under investigation.

Two other shootings occurred on the Dan Ryan within the last four months. Earlier this month, a man was grazed with a bullet as he exited near 83rd Street. In September, two people were shot while passing 71st Street.
