CHICAGO (WLS) -- Jackie Swint, 48, was taking out the garbage at her home in the Pill Hill neighborhood when she was shot multiple times.

"They say it didn't hit any main arteries. So that was a good thing, but it's a lot of holes," her brother Charles Swint said.

Swint, who remains hospitalized at Advocate Christ Hospital, is expected to be survive.

Police are searching for the gunman who approached on foot around 11 p.m. Tuesday in the 9300-block of South Chappel.

"I saw the guy running away. It was a young guy with a hoodie on," Charles Swint said.

Authorities are looking into reports that Swint's son was involved in some type of altercation earlier in the day and she may have been targeted. Neighbors said gang activity in the area has been on the rise.

"Chappel has never been that street where you find chaos ... until lately," neighbor Latia Sloan said.

"We're constantly talking about how black lives matter, but it doesn't seem like our youth recognize that," Regina Julun said. Julun, who is a childhood friend, said Swint is a hardworking mother who is well-respected in the neighborhood.

"When you're pointing guns at mothers and children, we've lost it," Julun said.
