RAMONA, Calif. -- A bear cub rescued in Pasadena is on the mend in San Diego County.

The black bear received her very first exam and vaccinations at The Fund for Animals Wildlife Center in Ramona on Thursday.

The cub was caught eating koi fish out of a pond outside a home in Pasadena.

She arrived at the wildlife center two weeks ago. The cub was sedated while veterinarians listened to her heart, cleaned out her paws, tagged her ear and carefully examined her from head to claw.

Wildlife center officials said she was emaciated when she came in. The cub has gained 3 pounds in one week, but she's still underweight at 16 pounds.

The wildlife center hopes to get her up to about 60 pounds in the next two months.

The cub is the third black bear to come to the center. The other two, both males, are much bigger at 70 pounds each. Wildlife center officials say they will likely be with them for another month, and California Fish and Wildlife will determine if they're ready to go back into the wild.

As for the female cub, wildlife center officials say she'll probably stay longer so she can regain her strength and health.
