Cat tips for hot summer weather
David Dinger of the Anti-Cruelty Society gives us tips for ownership and adoption of cats in the summer months.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- It's kitten season, where cats are in heat and we see a lot of kittens. Unfortunately, that means a lot of strays, and that means there are a lot of kittens are up for adoption. David Dinger, vice president of operations at the Anti-Cruelty Society, came into our ABC 7 Eyewitness News studio with a few cats to tell us about a special adoption event where you can get a cat for only $1. He also shared tips to keep your cats safe this summer.

David's Cat Tips:

1. If you plan to travel this summer:

Hire a pet sitter if you go out of town. Boarding facilities are less frequent than dog facilities, and cats don't adjust as well as dogs to new environment. It's better to keep them where they are comfortable.

2. To keep cats cool during the summer:

Be sure to have air circulation (whether that be with a fan or central air) and shade for your cat. Give them choices for cooling down.

3. If you keep your windows open:

Be sure to tightly secure the screens. Do this by using the pet-durable screens or by placing a piece of wood near the window frame to prevent them from sneaking out.
