CHICAGO (WLS) -- Illinois congressman Aaron Schock is defending himself against allegations he improperly spent taxpayer money on a trip to New York City.

Monday morning, Schock appeared at panel discussion in Chicago about immigration reform, but it was his trip to New York in September 2014 with his staff that has gotten the most attention. Schock was there for the Global Citizen Festival.

Congressional spending records show Schock spent more than $10,000 dollars that weekend. Though he says it was a business trip, in Instagram photos he posted he's seen at the festival and concert with Jay-Z.

"I'm glad my staff was able to go and be part of the historic event," Schock said. "Simply, I would say if that's not official, I don't know what is."

The New York expense comes after the congressman repaid taxpayers for the lavish Downton Abbey decor in his DC office and for hiring a private plane. A congressional inquiry into his spending practices is ongoing.
