CHICAGO (WLS) -- Francis Cardinal George was honored Sunday at a rare public appearance since his successor was announced last weekend.

Cardinal George was presented the Vision of Hope Award at the Congregation of the Resurrection award dinner.

The award is given to one who embodies the spirit of the resurrection of society.

"It's a way of saying thanks to the resurrectionists for all the hard work they've done in our societies for many, many decades, especially with eht Polish American community and it helps them also take care of their seminarians and older priests," the cardinal said.

The cardinal is using crutches to get around after treatment for an infection in his right foot a side effect of his ongoing cancer treatment.
