GARY, Ind. (WLS) -- The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has announced that Pope Francis has appointed 51-year-old Donald Hying to lead the Gary Diocese.

Hying has been serving as auxiliary bishop of Milwaukee's Catholic Archdiocese.

He will replace 76-year-old Bishop Dale Melczek, who is retiring after 18 years of leading the Gary Diocese.

Hying was rector of Saint Francis de Sales Seminary when he was named Milwaukee's auxiliary bishop in 2011.

He will be installed Jan. 6.
