Midnight Mass at Holy Name
Archbishop Blase Cupich Celebrated his first midnight Mass at Holy Name Cathedral.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Hundreds of people filled Holy Name Cathedral for Chicago Archbishop Blase Cupich's first midnight Mass there.

Many stood in the back of the church or side aisles at the Gold Coast church. His predecessor, Cardinal Francis George, sat to the side of the altar during the Christmas Mass.

In his homily, Cupich called on the faithful to serve others as they live their lives.

"I've seen it as well in the healthcare workers on-duty, back-to-back, for 12-hour shifts who have a bounce in their step, joy in their heart, that no one could ever take away from them. They know that God is real because they live their lives for another," Cupich said.

Cupich became Chicago's archbishop in November. He is the spiritual leader of more than two million Catholics in the area.

Cupich will visit Cook County Jail later on Christmas Day to hold Mass with prisoners at Division 11.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson will also speak at the jail Thursday. Jackson will visit Division 4. Jackson, who spoke at the jail last year, called on Cook County to consider releasing pretrial detainees charged with nonviolent offenses who can't afford bail. He would like to see those awaiting trial put on electronic monitoring.
