Birthday cards, gifts pour in for Wis. boy battling brain cancer

FOX CROSSING, Wis. -- His birthday isn't until Sunday, but Finley Volkman's celebration is in full swing.

Finley is a soon-to-be three year old from Fox Crossing, Wis. who is battling brain cancer.

To help make his birthday his mom started a birthday card drive. The outpouring of support has far exceeded Finley's birthday wish, reports WBAY.

Stacy Volkman was shocked as crate after crate of cards and packages were delivered to her house.

"It gives me strength to keep fighting. And it gives him strength to keep fighting. And it just brings happiness and hope to our family," she said.

According to the Volkman's mail carrier Virginia, it was one of if not the biggest delivery she's made in her almost 18 year career.

"It started yesterday and then today there were lots," she said. "I work tomorrow, so we'll see what happens.""

The cards and packages weren't the only surprise for Finley. On Friday, Officer Stu Zuehls from the Neenah Police Department put out a call to his brothers and sisters in blue and they answered.

"To see as two squads rolled in, as four squads rolled in and they kept coming more and more and more, to see the number of officers that were coming here, and some of them weren't even working that were volunteering their time, yeah that really warms my heart," Officer Zuehls said.

At least two dozen members of the law enforcement community from jurisdictions all across northeast Wisconsin paid Finley and his family a visit and sang "Happy Birthday." Then they showed off their squad cars.

"It's nice to know that we can help make his day, just by something so small as this," said Officer Dan Wiechman.

It was not only a birthday treat for Finley, but one that means so much to the men and women who showed up to help him celebrate.

"If we can go out there, every day, a foot forward and if this helps him, every day, a foot forward we're there," said Chief Lowell James of the Black Creek Police Department.
