CHICAGO (WLS) -- Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a terminal neuromuscular disease that attacks a person's muscles. About 35,000 people in the United States are living with ALS, and there is no cure yet. Thousands in Chicagoland are trying to change that with the 13th annual Les Turner ALS Walk for Life. It takes place in several communities, including in Chicago at Soldier Field. ABC 7 is media sponsor, and meteorologist Phil Schwarz is the host for the walk.
The ALS Walk For Life raises funds for the Les Turner ALS Foundation. Wendy Abrams, executive director of the Les Turner ALS Foundation, and John Rooney, who lives with ALS, joined us live from Soldier Field during our ABC 7 Eyewitness News Sunday Morning to tell us how the event helps the cause.
