CHICAGO (WLS) -- ABC 7 EyeWitness News Salutes as Chicagoan who is now serving in the U.S. Navy.

Airman Domonique Benns, a 2012 graduate of Phoenix Military Academy on the Westside, is onboard the USS Ronald Reagan - one of the Navy's largest warships. Onboard, he is responsible for maintaining aviation equipment like radars and weapons systems.

"The Navy gives me to opportunity to work on equipment that you only see in the movies. It has also put me in a position to be successful for the rest of my life," Benns said.

The Reagan is currently in a transition, departing San Diego for its new base in Japan. Benns says he is proud to serve on the ship.

"The best part of working here is all of the experience on this ship," he said. "I learn something new each day."

And that's why ABC 7 Salutes those who are from our community and now serving our country.
