Join the WE Day party on ABC this Sunday

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Charlize Theron, Anne Hathaway, Seth Rogen, Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez are just a few examples of the star power at the WE Day celebration, The WE Day movement encourages teens to turn their focus from "me" to "we" by volunteering in their communities.

Empowering young people to change the world is the focus of WE Day. Christian Burgos is one local teen who has turned tragedy into triumph, despite a very tough loss.

"Whatever I can do to help other people, to share my story I'm down for it," said Christian.

His sister, Alexandria Burgos, was killed when a stray bullet came through the widow of a home while picking up Christian on the Northwest side in October 2014.

"I just remember the gun shots. I didn't really know that they were because they didn't sound like gun shots so I was confused... I didn't really know what was going on until someone said get down there's gun shots. So first thing I had to do was run to her to see if she was ok, but by the time I got to her she wasn't ok," said Christian. "What was the point of you killing someone that is not doing anything to you? Kids need to learn that once you pull out that gun and pull that trigger. It's done with. The other life is done with."

A hard life lesson Christian faced at a young age but now he is helping people learn by telling his story. Christian teamed up with WE Day in an effort to stop the violence here at home and around the country. His mother couldn't be more proud.

"WE Day has helped us express and tell her story and to help other families and the next generation, the youth, like he said, and kids his age and even younger that through a tragedy that has happened, that can always be a bright side of everything, and to always have hope in your heart and through a tragedy have something positive to come of it," said Milagros Burgos, Christian's mother.

"There can be a turning point their generation, in my generation I mean, I feel like we can stand up. We can stop all this... and if I helped anybody then I am so, so, so, so happy. Whoever I can help that's awesome," said Christian.

Good indeed. We know Christian will continue to keep up the good work and keep his sister's memory alive.

This Sunday Christian will be featured alongside other inspiring youth in the WE Day broadcast on Sunday, August 28, at 6:00 p.m. on ABC7.
