NORTH RIVERSIDE, Ill (WLS) -- World War II veterans were honored Saturday at a celebration in the suburbs marking the end of World War II.

It was all part of the "Spirit of 45" event commemorating the 69th anniversary of VJ Day.

Veterans and their families were treated to an afternoon picnic and plenty of music at the Scottish Home in North Riverside.

Vets say everyone should be reminded what happened during that time.

"I think it's important that we honor those veterans who fought and ridded the world of some terrible people, continue to give Americans freedom," said Wayne Rutherford, U.S. Coast Guard.

Veterans say they felt honored by today's celebration and are looking forward to next year's international 70th VJ Day anniversary in Washington.
