Hutchison pitches Blue Jays past White Sox 6-0

TORONTO -- Drew Hutchison shook off an illness, and then pitched a gem.

Hutchison tossed a four-hitter, Justin Smoak and Josh Donaldson homered and the Toronto Blue Jays beat Chicago White Sox6-0 on Monday night.

"Sometimes you have your best games when you're not feeling so good," manager John Gibbons said. "He was really hitting on everything. He had the good exploding fastball, some good breaking balls and mixed in some changeups."

Hutchison (4-1) allowed four singles, struck out eight and walked none while throwing just 96 pitches in his second career shutout. The other came at Texas on May 16, 2014.

"I did a good job of getting ahead and had a really good sinker tonight," Hutchison said. "I got a lot of early swing ground balls and got double plays. That was the key to getting deep in the game and keeping the pitch count down."

Hutchison also snapped Toronto's 10-game streak of allowing at least one home run.

"He was moving the ball around pretty good," Chicago's Geovany Soto said of Hutchison. "He was throwing a lot of strikes. He was commanding the high heat. He did a great job."

Smoak hit a two-run homer in the first and Donaldson had a solo drive in the second as the Blue Jays won consecutive games for the first time since a three-game streak from May 6-9.

The loss in the opener of a season-long, 11-game trip stopped a five-game road win streak for the White Sox. Chicago has dropped six of seven overall.

"We weren't very good offensively, we weren't good defensively," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said.

Chicago's Hector Noesi made his first start since May 9. He replaced rookie Carlos Rodon, who is being skipped this time through the rotation to limit his innings.

Noesi (0-4) allowed five runs and five hits in a season-high seven innings. The White Sox have lost all seven games Noesi has pitched in this season.

"We just have to try to put everything together to get back on track," Noesi said.

Noesi was in trouble right from the first batter, with Jose Reyes hitting a leadoff double in his return from the 15-day disabled list.

Donaldson walked and Edwin Encarnacion hit a grounder to second, but shortstop Alexei Ramirez failed to touch second base as he tried to start a double play, leaving runners at second and third.

"It should be turned," Ventura said. "It wasn't and it ends up hurting you."

Chris Colabello hit a two-run single and Smoak followed with a drive to right for his first homer since April 24.

It was the 18th time this season Toronto has scored four or more runs in an inning, more than any other major league team. The Blue Jays did it twice in Sunday's 8-2 win over Seattle.

Donaldson hit a two-out homer into the second deck in center in the second. It was his 10th of the year.

Noesi settled down and retired the next 10 batters before Russell Martin's leadoff walk in the sixth. Martin was promptly erased on Colabello's double-play grounder.

"The only thing really good about the game was it was fast," Ventura said. "That was it."

HAWK STAYS HOME

Longtime White Sox broadcaster Ken "Hawk" Harrelson is missing this 11-game road trip because of a minor surgical procedure. Chicago Bulls broadcaster Chuck Swirsky is filling in.

TRAINER'S ROOM

White Sox: OF Avisail Garcia left in the second inning with a recurrence of soreness in his right knee. He was replaced by J.B. Shuck. Garcia returned to the lineup Sunday after sitting out the previous two games. "Everything was good with him at first and then I saw him limping," Ventura said.

Blue Jays: Jose Bautista was out of the lineup for a second straight day after getting a cortisone shot in his strained right shoulder Sunday. The slugger hopes to play again Tuesday.

White Sox: LHP John Danks (2-4, 5.11 ERA) has won just once in his past four starts. He is 2/3 with a 6.67 ERA in six career starts north of the border.

Blue Jays: RHP R.A. Dickey (2-5, 5.49 ERA) got a complete-game victory over the Angels in his previous start, winning for the first time in three outings. He is 2-4 with an 8.10 ERA in nine career games against the White Sox.
