Sources: Redskins planning on starting Kirk Cousins in Week 1

The Redskins are planning on starting Kirk Cousins at quarterback in their regular-season opener against the Dolphins, sources told ESPN's Dianna Russini.

Cousins, who has started nine games over his first three seasons in the NFL, would get the starting nod over Robert Griffin III, who is awaiting clearance to play after suffering concussion-like symptoms Aug. 20 in a preseason game.

Cousins, 27, was the starter for Saturday night's preseason game against the Ravens. The 27-year-old has been sharp in his first two preseason appearances, completing 20 of 26 passes for 245 yards and a touchdown.

Griffin practiced with the Redskins this past week and initially was cleared by Dr. Robert N. Kurtzke, an independent neurologist, to play against the Ravens.

But after "further scrutiny" by Kurtzke and a team of doctors, Griffin instead will be sidelined for at least one more week.

Griffin went through at least a one-hour workout before Saturday's game. Griffin did his normal pregame routine, taking hard drops in the pocket and throwing with velocity. He tossed to stationary targets until he started throwing downfield passes.
