CHICAGO (WLS) -- Two people were killed and a Chicago police sergeant was injured after an SUV rear-ended a squad car in the 4000-block of West Ogden Avenue.
The vehicle struck a police car waiting in traffic and crashed into a restaurant in Chicago's Little Village neighborhood around 11 p.m. Sunday. One man was thrown from the SUV. The other was pinned inside. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses said the SUV involved in the crash was spotted traveling up to 100 miles per hour just before the crash. Investigators are looking into whether the driver was being chased or racing.
The officer was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Two employees and a customer were inside the restaurant when the crash occurred. Sunny Silwadi, who works at a nearby gas station, said they're lucky to have walked away unscathed.
"I looked out the window and I heard somebody revving and the cop was right there on the light. I don't know if he hit another car. But after he hit the cop, I don't know if he hit another car. He smashed into the building and fire hydrant. It was crazy. It was shocking, man. I seen it though it was too fast," Silwadi said.
Police have not yet identified the men who died in the crash.
