Bronzeville standoff suspect shot by police

CHICAGO (WLS) -- An armed man who barricaded himself inside a South Side home for nearly eight hours was shot by officers after he pointed a gun at them, police said.

The Chicago Tribune reports that man was a former Chicago police officer.

The Cook County Sheriff's Office said deputies attempted to serve a warrant on a domestic battery and aggravated assault charge in the 4800-block of South Calumet in the city's Bronzeville neighborhood around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

During this attempt, the sheriff's office said a 46-year-old man answered the door armed with a handgun and barricaded himself inside.

CTA Green Line service was suspended between the 35th-Bronzeville-IIT and Garfield stations because trains run directly behind that building.

The sheriff's office handed over the incident to the Chicago Police Department SWAT team. Nearby homes were evacuated and officers secured the area. Negotiations lasted for hours. They were unsuccessful.

Around 3 a.m. Thursday, police decided to fire gas canisters into the building. They said the man ran into the garage and pointed a gun at the officers inside. They fired at him, wounding him several times.

Tre Burton told ABC7 he was dropping off a friend in the area as the shots rang out.

"Real crazy. I didn't know whether somebody got hit or if the shots just hit and miss. It was a lot of gunshots. It came out of nowhere," Burton said.

"We looked down the street and it was a lot of police. They were running back and forth, trying to take cover. It was crazy," said Mario Duncan, another witness.

Chicago fire officials said he was taken to Stroger Hospital. His condition is unknown.

No other injuries were reported. A weapon was recovered at the scene.

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating the shooting.

Green Line service resumed around 4:20 a.m. Thursday.
