Intersection of Damen, Elston, Fullerton avenues reconstructed into 3 separate intersections

CHICAGO (WLS) -- One long-awaited Chicago intersection renovation finished up Monday morning.

It was a ribbon cutting but really it was really a celebration after decades of frustration trying to get through the six-point intersection of Elston, Fullerton and Damen avenues, which has now been streamlined and is much quicker

Monday, commuters in Bucktown could not be happier.

The once extremely confusing six point intersection where Damen, Fullerton and Elston met has been transformed into three separate intersections, thanks to the construction of a new part of Elston that winds its way north and west and traffic flows effortlessly.

On Monday, Mayor Rahm Emanuel cut the ribbon on the $22.5 million project.

"This would not be possible if it wasn't for the state of Illinois helping us out which we have asked for continuously because we are the most dynamic part of the economy," Emanuel said.

It's not just drivers who appreciate the new intersection. Cyclists will like that it comes equipped with more distinct bike lanes and for pedestrians, there are wider sidewalks.

There will be 162 trees planted in this area. A place once synonymous with frustration could almost be described as tranquil.
