Police are searching for the gunman who opened fire on the Bishop Ford Freeway early Thursday morning.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A verbal altercation in downtown Chicago led to an early morning shooting on the Bishop Ford Freeway, Illinois State Police said.

One person was wounded. He or she does not have life threatening injuries, according to the statement from ISP.

The shooting closed the outbound Bishop Ford Freeway from the Dan Ryan Expressway to 103rd Street for a couple of hours early Thursday morning.

According to police, there was some sort of verbal altercation downtown before the offenders followed the victims, two males and a female, down the expressway to the Stony Island Ramp at 103, where multiple shots were fired around 4:50 a.m. The gunman then exited the expressway.

The victims - a male driver, 21, and two passengers, male, 26; and female, 20- drove to a nearby police station for help.

An ABC7 I-Team investigation found highway shootings more than tripled in recent years. In 2010, six shootings were reported on Chicago area expressways. In 2014, that number jumped to 18. Officials said there were more reports of shootings, but police didn't find any evidence.

Two weeks ago Krissandra Brown's car and an ambulance were shot during the afternoon rush while on the Dan Ryan Expressway.

"We just heard a pop. And then my window shattered," she said.

Last October, Brad Schubert was on the Eisenhower Expressway near Hillside when he was shot at.

"It seemed as though he kept shooting as he was slowing down to fall behind, and the bullets went into the back passenger window," Schubert said.

Illinois State Police believe someone shot a pellet gun at Schubert's car.

The most danger time for highway shootings is between midnight and 5 a.m., the ABC7 I-Team determined.
