Driver pulled over for speeding dies in South Side crash
A man pulled over for speeding in the 6700-block of South Ashland Avenue died in a crash while fleeing police overnight.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A man pulled over for speeding on Chicago's South Side died after getting back into the SUV he was driving and crashing into another vehicle blocks away, police say.

The traffic stop occurred in the 6700-block of South Ashland Avenue around 10:30 p.m. Sunday. The three men inside the Dodge SUV were asked to exit the vehicle, police said.

Officers said the driver got back into the vehicle and drove south on Ashland Avenue. Police say they followed him and saw the SUV blow through a red light and strike a westbound Hyundai Sonata on West 76th Street. The SUV hit a fire hydrant and a light pole before coming to a stop, police said.

The driver was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he later died. Authorities have not identified him.

A 45-year-old woman and a 1 1/2 year old girl were in the car that was hit. Both are listed in good condition at Holy Cross Hospital.

Police say they do not know why the driver tried to get away from them. The two other men in the SUV when it was pulled over are not in custody.
