CHICAGO (WLS) -- The city of Chicago opened up a new shared street in the Uptown neighborhood Saturday.

The plaza-like stretch of Argyle Street goes from Broadway to Sheridan Road.

The new street has a raised roadway with decorative pavers and other elements designed accommodate foot and automobile traffic.

"This project creates an area that is more walkable, more sustainable and has a greater sense of place for the community," Mayor Emanuel said. "Whether you are walking, biking, driving or using public transit, we want all modes of transportation to be safe to use and accessible for all Chicagoans."

The project also features the use of permeable pavers and infiltration planters designed to soak up rainwater.

The $4.5 million project was funded by a combination of TIF, menu and Department of Water infrastructure funding.
