Temperatures stay low in Chicago and the suburbs as snow falls in Indiana and Michigan.

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (WLS) -- Light flurries fell in Chicago and the suburbs, but heavier snow in Indiana and Michigan led to backups on major roadways.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Elkhart, La Porte and St. Joseph counties in Indiana through 7 p.m. Thursday.

A jackknifed semi-truck slid off the ramp on eastbound I-94 to U.S. 20 around 7 a.m. Thursday near Michigan City, Ind.

Two major incidents were reported on I-94 in Michigan. A semi jackknifed near Union Pier at 7 a.m. and at least three semis collided near exit 128 in Jackson County around 8 a.m.

"It was a complete sheet of ice everywhere on the west side of town everyone was sliding it was just chaos," Derek Klyce, driver, said.

Officials remind drivers to slow down during winter weather.

"As a normal driver, they don't know what's up ahead of them and as soon as you get closer to Michigan icy things change and there are curves and blind spots next thing you know you're running up on traffic," Indiana State Police Trooper Randy Palmer said. "It can just change, wind changes direction, it can change. It can be dry and it could be snow-covered the next minute."

"This is the first I can recall this much this soon, but they said it was flurries, but I heard the lake-effect snuck in there, and you never know when it's lake-effect," Joe Baker, snow plow driver, said.

The snow didn't stick in the city or most of the suburbs. But the cold isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Temperatures will stay low through next week, dropping as low as 24-degrees on Tuesday.

"Last year I was caught unprepared. I didn't have the right tires. I didn't have the right boots and I was miserable. Couldn't find boots anywhere. So this year I'm ready. I got my tires, got my boots and I'm all set to go," Mickie Stelter said.
