Monks run Bridgeport B and B

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Near the intersection of 31st and Aberdeen in Bridgeport, ten monks spend their lives praying - sometimes for ways to make money and keep their mission alive.

The Monastery of the Holy Cross began 21 years ago in the space that was once Church of the Immaculate Conception.

"We are a contemplative Benedictine community of monks. We were invited here by Cardinal Bernardine in 1991 and our work is to pray and to offer retreats to local Christians," Prior Peter Funk said.

They start their day at 3:30 a.m., and pray at least seven times a day. What's unique about this monastery is they also run a bed and breakfast.

"Hospitality is a part of the Benedictine tradition. And so we just follow in what our founders have done to offer a place to stay for travelers," Brother Ezekiel Brennen, monastery guestmaster.

They have two B&B apartments.

"This is our loft apartment. It's a three bedroom apartment," Brother Brennen said. "It can sleep five. In this apartment we serve a hot cooked breakfast."

There's no fasting for customers, who instead eat as though their prayers have been answered.

"Sausage and ham and eggs benedict. That's a big feature," Brother Brennen said. A big breakfast for guests- but something more simple for the monks.

"No we don't get that," Brother Brennen said. " Bread and toast. Water and coffee."

Spending the night at the monastery is $185 per couple .
