GARY, Ind. (WLS) -- A celebration in northwest Indiana Monday as one of the last obstacles to expansion at the Gary/Chicago International Airport is ripped up.
Gary's Mayor Karen-Freeman Wilson, along with federal, state and local officials were on hand as the work went on behind them.
Heavy equipment was removing the Canadian National Railway tracks. Other work crews to the south began "cutting-over" the old rail line to create a new one. This will allow for the completion of an expanded runway.
It is expected to be ready by June of next year or sooner.
