ABC 7 EyeWitness News Salutes eleven local students who are working hard to achieve their educational goals and earning scholarships.

ABC 7 EyeWitness News Salutes eleven local students who are working hard to achieve their educational goals and earning scholarships. The students come from Chicago neighborhoods like Back of the Yards, Pilsen and Little Village, as well as suburban Waukegan and Wheeling. All of them were chosen for their grade point average, letters of recommendation, and personal stories of hardship.

Chicago Alderman Ricardo Munoz was part of the scholarship review committee. He praised the students, as well as Car Outlet, the local car dealership that put the scholarship program together. Munoz said it's important to recognize the students but also the companies that are willing to step forward and raise money to help kids in their communities.

So we salute the following students for embracing education:

  • Yoko Acosta, a graduate of Marine Military Academy High School
  • Estefany Alvarez, a graduate of Wheeling High School
  • Xiadany Ayala, a graduate of Catalyst Maria High School
  • Evelin Duran, a graduate of St. Ignatius College Prep
  • Christian Gonzalez, a graduate of CICS Northtown Academy
  • Madelyn Hayes-DeLuca, a graduate of Loyola Academy
  • Mariana Hernandez, a graduate of Devry University Advantage Academy
  • David Martinez, a graduate of Waukegan High School
  • Karen Medina, a graduate of Frederick W. Von Steuben Metropolitan Science High School
  • Maiyah Ocampo, a graduate of David G. Farragut Career Academy High School
  • Abigail Romo, a graduate of Rauner College Prep
