Snow, sub-zero temps mix for slick roads
Early morning snowfall led to slick, icy roads across the city and suburbs.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Early morning snowfall led to slick, icy roads across the city and suburbs.

Near southwest suburban LaGrange, emergency crews scrambled to clear five wrecks along a short stretch of I-55 during the Friday morning rush hour. In the northwest suburbs, Route 53 was littered with lane closures after crashes near Palatine and Arlington Heights.

"The cars coming from the exits and everything were not aware the road was ice. They were coming in very quickly and cars were spinning and there were a lot of cars backwards on the road in the other direction because they'd spun out," Victoria Nowakowski said. She said several cars were driving with hazard lights on.

In the city, Chicago Department of Transportation officials said its full fleet of snow removal trucks was out early to go over the main streets, including Lake Shore Drive. Track them in real time at www.chicagoshovels.org or follow @streetsandsan on Twitter.

The snow wasn't heavy, but the flash freeze of sub-zero temperatures led to icy pavement. It hit as a lot of people are heading out of town for spring break. While there aren't any major delays at O'Hare and Midway International airports, passengers said the drive to get there slowed them down.

"We detoured probably five or six times just to try to get to this airport this morning. And it usually takes about thirty minutes and it took an hour and a half," Angelo Lazzara, who drove from Orland Park to Midway, said.
