NW Indiana gets snow, Chicago braces for cold
A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for Porter and La Porte counties in Northwest Indiana, while Chicago braces for a frigid weekend.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Watch for Northwest Indiana's Porter County and La Porte County until 7 a.m. Sunday.

Lake-effect snow, heavy at times, is expected with total accumulations between 4 and 8 inches, the weather service said. The weather service also said that northwest winds of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts over 30 mph, will cause blowing and drifting snow and is likely to produce whiteout conditions.

Snow began falling in Vaparaiso just before 9 a.m. Wednesday, and local police urged motorists to drive slowly and carefully, letting weather conditions dictate driving behavior. Bitter cold accompanied the snow, with air temperatures at about 13 and wind chills at -5.

Snowy roads and whiteout conditions were reported in parts of Northwest Indiana and Michigan throughout the day, though by 6 p.m. much of the snow in Northwest Indiana had stopped. In Berrien County, Mich., cell phone video captured two accidents on I-94, including a pileup involving several semis, a bus and a hauler pulling cars.

CHICAGO AREA TEMPERATURES DROP THROUGH WEEKEND

Temperatures across the Chicago area fell into the single digits on Thursday with subzero wind chills due to gusts up to 35 mph. Temperatures and wind chills this weekend are expected to approach the lowest recorded so far this year.
