Chicago Weather: Light snow creates slick roads during Thursday morning rush

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Light snow created slippery driving conditions in the Chicago area during the Thursday morning commute.

The wet, messy pavement may have caused a semi to jackknife on the inbound Dan Ryan Expressway near 63rd Street in the early morning hours. The truck, which was hauling thousands of pounds of candy, ended up on top of a guard rail. No injuries were reported.

Later Thursday morning, a car lost control on the outbound Bishop Ford Freeway near 111th Street. No one was seriously injured.

Commuters said they have been trying to be careful. Drivers had to take it slow Thursday morning.

"It is messy, but it's beautiful also. The traffic is really busy and slow. But everybody is driving really good," said Lillian Thurman, a commuter.

"I don't want to get into any accidents. I don't want to crash. I love my truck," said Khristile Semone Smith, another commuter.

The Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation deployed more than 200 trucks overnight to keep roads clear for the morning rush. Crews tackled Lake Shore Drive and main streets first. Officials said they will monitor weather conditions throughout the day and make necessary adjustments.

The Illinois Tollway deployed its full fleet of 185 snow plows overnight. Drivers are advised to reduce speed, keep a safe distance from other vehicles and leave room for the slow-moving trucks so crews can do their job.

ABC7 Meteorologist Tracy Butler said light snow is expected to linger in the Chicago area until early Thursday afternoon. Only about 1-2 inches of snow is expected to accumulate, mainly in the south suburbs and in northwest Indiana.

High temperatures will be in the mid-to-low 30s Thursday, Butler said. Skies will be mainly cloudy, with peeks of sun possible in the afternoon.

The next chance for snow in the Chicago area will be late Friday night. Butler said the system is expected to move quickly through the area, changing from snow to rain before moving out early Saturday morning.

Next week, high temperatures are expected to rise to the 50s and 60s with periods of rain.
