Ice temporarily closes bike path
Bikers and joggers along Chicago's lakefront were rerouted Monday by icy conditions and large waves along Lake Michigan.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Bikers and joggers along Chicago's lakefront were rerouted Monday by icy conditions and large waves along Lake Michigan.

Police near Oak Street Beach turned bikers and joggers around because of slippery conditions. Police shut the trail down Monday morning around 7:30 a.m. after several bicyclists slid off the path because of the ice. Crews were called in to salt it down.

The wind-driven waves mixed with arctic temperatures made for a tough morning for runners like James O'Shea.

"It's pretty bad if you go down through there, where the lake blows up on there, it gets icy. It's pretty bad, you have to be very careful," O'Shea said.

Winds gusting up to 30 miles per hour were reported along the lakefront Monday morning as highs hovered in the 20s, with wind chills around zero early in the day - a crisp and cold start to December.

The Chicago Park District salted the path on Monday and has barricades in places that remain slippery.
