Kittens rescued from sewer drain pipe in Portage, Ind.

PORTAGE, Ind. (WLS) -- Firefighters rescued two kittens from a sewer in Portage, Ind., over the weekend.

An employee at the Portage Car Wash heard kittens meowing in the drain pipe and contacted Michelle Duca, founder of Kibble Kitchen Pet Pantry. The pet pantry, fire officials and Portage Animal Control and Care flushed the kittens from the pipe with a light spray of water.

The first attempt brought out one of the kittens, but crews had to return a second time to rescue the second. Duca said they're calling the 6-week-old kittens Piper and Josh, after one of the rescuers. They both went to the vet to be checked out.

"Kittens are healthy other than a little thin and they have Giardia from the dirty water in the drain but will recover fully!" Duca said.

A third kitten that died in the sewer was buried at her home, Duca said.
