CHICAGO (WLS) -- Target will accept gift cards from more than 600 other brand stores in a gift card exchange.

Trade-in rates depend on the gift card. A card from a big box store is worth more than regional establishment, but it all depends on demand. For example, if a shopper has a $100 Walmart gift card, he or she can exchange it for a $85 Target gift card.

Target is one of the first big box stores to get in on the gift card exchange bandwagon. The company partnered with Cardpool and Nextworth, which offer online gift card exchanges and trade-ins, respectively, for the program. The gift cards can be exchanged at any Target that has an electronics trade-in program, according to Networth. Use the store locator to find those locations at http://www.targettradeinprogram.com/#?lnk=ct_menu_04_37.

Several other companies also allow people to buy and sell gift cards, which can also be sold for cash at Coinstar kiosks.

The Target gift card exchange is set up at about 1,500 Target stores inside their electronics department.
