GURNEE, Ill. (WLS) -- Lake County health officials said a case of whooping cough has been confirmed at Warren Township High School in Gurnee.

Whooping cough is caused by bacteria infecting the mouth, nose and throat. The illness is spread through the air by coughing. Whooping cough may start with cold-like symptoms, followed by a cough.

In a letter to parents, the school district asked then to watch their children for symptoms for the next three weeks.
