Long-time Chicago Defender journalist passes away

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Award-winning Chicago Defender columnist and photographer Teresa "Teesee" Fambro Hooks died Sunday in her home.

She was 80.

Hooks worked for the Defender from 1961 until late last year when she officially retired, according to the publication.

She was the paper's society reporter and women's editor, who had a column called "Teesee's Town" where she covered community news.

Hooks was recently the recipient of the Defender's annual Women of Excellence Award.

Cheryl Mainor, the Defender president and publisher, said Hooks was a "vibrant woman and an amazing role model and mentor for all of the Defender employees. We are deeply saddened."

The Chicago Defender released a statement Sunday night: "It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our own Grand Dame, Ms. Theresa "Teesee" Fambro Hooks. Teesee passed away today, January 31, 2016 in the comfort of her home. She was 80 Years old. We will miss her greatly and are saddened by our loss. The Chicago Defender sends our most sincere condolences to her family and friends. We will post arrangements for her memorial when they become available.
