CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago is taking the first step on Tuesday to redevelop the old Main Post Office.

The city's Community Development Commission will vote to recommend Mayor Rahm Emanuel's plan for the West Loop building.

He wants the city to acquire the property through eminent domain and solicit development bids from private companies.

The building has been empty for more than 20 years.
