CHICAGO (WLS) -- A man was shot just blocks away from where Chicago's new top cop talked about violence with West Side residents.

As Superintendent Eddie Johnson started Wednesday evening's meeting in the Austin neighborhood, officers raced to a shooting just two blocks away.

The 19-year-old was seriously wounded when he was shot on a sidewalk in the 5700-block of W. Augusta around 6 p.m.

Police said the victim was shot in the back and leg when someone pulled up in a vehicle and fired shots.

The victim was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in serious condition.

Police said a "person of interest" is being questioned.
