Explosion damages Northfield home

NORTHFIELD, Ill. (WLS) -- Police responded early Wednesday to a call about an explosion in north suburban Northfield.

On Wednesday at1:17 a.m., the Northfield Police Department received a 911 call from the 400 block of Chapel Hill about some type of explosion at a home.

When they arrived, crews saw no fire, but say there was damage on the exterior of the home. Police, fire and ATF crews are investigating the cause. The FBI and the Cook County Bomb Squad also responded to the scene.

"We believe this was an isolated incident, with no threat to the community or our school system," the police chief said.

The blast was powerful enough to blow out the front windows and startle neighbors out of their sleep.

The homeowner, who was inside at the time of the blast, said investigators found an explosive device outside the home. It was near the first-floor guest room at the front of the house, which sustained the most damage.

The homeowner did say he believes he was targeted but did not discuss who could be responsible or why.
