BURR RIDGE, Ill. (WLS) -- Residents are upset and confused after a lake in a southwest suburban Burr Ridge community mysteriously drained almost empty in a matter of hours Wednesday.

The water in the lake behind the homes is virtually gone. One homeowner said he watched the water recede and then all but disappear in a matter of hours Wednesday. And while village officials are investigating, no one seems to know what happened yet.

A photo of the lake taken before 7 a.m. Wednesday shows the water went all the way up to the tree line on one side and the grass on the other. Within a few hours it was gone.

"The negative about this, beside it's not very peaceful or nice-looking, is there's a dead fish smell, mosquitos are up, there's a dead-a lot of dead fish and pools of water that could obviously breed mosquitos," said Jim Fannin.

"We called the Burr Ridge Park District and reported it, and they reported that they don't know what is the matter at the moment but they are investigating and trying to do whatever they can," said Jim Baird.

Burr Ridge police officers are also at the scene to see if there is anything they can do to help, but the cause of the drainage is still a mystery.
