CHICAGO (WLS) -- A teenage girl escaped from a man who was trying to sexually assault her in an alley in Lincoln Park earlier this month, police said.

The attempted assault happened August 16 around 11:30 p.m. in the 2000-block of North Mohawk Street, according to police. The 17-year-old girl was walking home from the DePaul University library on Armitage Avenue when an unknown male approached her from behind, pushed her into the alley, pushed her on the ground and tried to sexually assault her. She was able to fend off the offender and get help.

According to officials, the offender is described as a white male who was wearing a white t-shirt and black pants.

No one is in custody.

The girl was treated at Illinois Masonic Hospital.

DePaul University did not issue an alert. Officials at the school said the library closes at 6 p.m. and the incident was far from the university.
