Chicago firefighter falls through staircase in house fire, survives

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A Chicago firefighter is doing OK after he fell through a staircase Wednesday evening while battling a fire in the West Englewood neighborhood, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

The fire occurred in the 6900-block of South Paulina Street shortly before 6 p.m. A mayday was initially called, but the firefighter was found.

The firefighter was backing out as the stairway collapsed. He went "down but was able to slow fall and climb out," according to a Chicago Fire Department tweet.

The firefighter was not transported to the hospital.

No injuries were reported from the fire.
